On Tuesday, July 19, local dailies reported extensively on the succession politics with top presidential candidates traversing the country, 20 days to the polls.

The dailies also reported on the Deputy Presidential debate that will see Azimio La Umoja Martha Karua face off against Kenya Kwanza's Rigathi Gachagua.
The daily reported that Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga's presidential bid received a major boost.
This is after a group of Agikuyu elders performed a ritual to cleanse the community from the controversial Ichaweri oathings of 1969.

Led by their chairman Ngugu Gaithuma, the Kiama Kia Ma elders performed a cleansing ceremony in Kiambaa.
Gaithuma said their goal was to encourage unity in the country, while the 1969 oath only brought division.

He questioned what was wrong for one from another community to lead the nation if they possessed the leadership qualities.
He dismissed the consequences in the oath, explaining that Mwai Kibaki was elected in 2002, and nothing happened to the people.
The publication reported that the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) warned of a possible return to violence in Marsabit county after two months of calm.
NCCK Northern Kenya Branch Chairperson Wario Qampicha expressed fears over recent killings by armed bandits in Saku and Laisamis sub-counties.
The cleric said memories of the chilling murders of innocent residents by criminals in a two-year reign of terror were still fresh in the minds of many.

He said the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed by the government in May and the ongoing security operation had restored some semblance of calm in the once restive region, but cases of banditry are slowly creeping back.
He urged locals to cooperate with security agencies to identify and bring to book criminals among them.
The daily reported Deputy President William Ruto said the Kenya Kwanza administration would not investigate President Uhuru Kenyatta for his past wrongdoings if it wins the August 9 General Election.
Ruto said contrary to reports being propagated by opponents in the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party, the planned establishment of a state capture commission is not meant to target any individual.
He said his government would only focus on eliminating cartels that have clutched key institutions that ought to be dealing with corruption and investigations.

Deputy President William Ruto will consult with his Kenya Kwanza principals on whether he will participate in the presidential debate.
Ruto said the principals would have the final say but did not rule out taking part in the debate.
Ruto blamed the media for his team’s hesitance to decide on the matter.
He noted media houses should declare their political leaning instead of purporting to offer non-partisan coverage.

Ruto’s campaign secretariat said it had resolved to allow Ruto and Gachagua to make their own decisions.
In its recent findings, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) reported that Azimio-One Kenya’s Raila Odinga is getting less media coverage.
The paper reported that a prisoner was arraigned at a Kiambu court for escaping from lawful custody.
Moses Mutinye, a Ugandan, is reported to have fled on Wednesday, July 13, before being re-arrested.
He was working on the prison's farm behind Kiambu Police lines when he escaped under the watchful eyes of prison warders Alex Chunzira and Daniel Thiong'o, who were guarding.
Mutinye told senior principal magistrate Manuela Kinyanjui that he would still escape if a second opportunity presented itself, adding that he was tired of doing garden work.

He insisted that his rights were being violated by prison authorities, who he said forced him to do manual work on farms.
Mutinye was handed a three months sentence in prison at the same facility.
